Millions of Americans are looking to buy smaller-sized clothing as a new class of blockbuster weight-loss drugs like Ozempic (Semaglutide) help them to slim down, The Wall Street Journal reported Sunday, citing several retailers and fashion designers.

Aside from choosing smaller sizes, some shoppers also are buying body-hugging or even risqué designs. Several brands are adjusting their collections to replace zippers with adjustable corsets and more sheer looks.

Clothing boutique Lafayette 148 has seen 5% of its customers buy new outfits after losing weight, often replacing size-12 items with size 6 or 8, Chief Executive Deirdre Quinn told the newspaper. The trend is positive not only because of higher sales, but also because smaller sizes use less fabric.

About 15.5 million people, or 6% of U.S. adults, said they have tried the new class of drugs, according to Gallup survey data cited by the Journal. Originally developed to treat diabetes, the drugs known as GLP-1 have helped three-quarters of respondents to lose weight, they said in the survey.

Sales of the three biggest sizes of women’s button-down shirts declined 10.9% in the first three months of 2024 from two years earlier at a dozen brands, according to data from researcher Impact Analytics. Sales of those same button-down shirts in the three smallest sizes grew 12.1%, data cited by the Journal indicate.

Danish pharmaceutical firm Novo Nordisk (NVO) makes Ozempic and Wegovy, the version of the drug approved for weight loss. Eli Lilly (NYSE:LLY) developed its own GLP-1 drug with the brand name Mounjaro.
