5 Health Benefits of GLP-1s Beyond Weight Loss

Hey folks — Healthline published a good roundup on this and I wanted to share it, because it's the same stuff we talk about in clinic all the time. (Link to the full article at the bottom, as always.)

Most people think of GLP-1 medications (Semaglutide and Tirzepatide) as weight-loss shots. Fair. But after 1,300+ patients at our Puyallup and Federal Way clinics, I can tell you the weight is often just the first thing that changes. Here's what the research says is happening under the hood:

Heart health. The FDA approved Wegovy to reduce the risk of cardiovascular death, heart attack, and stroke in adults with cardiovascular disease and obesity. That came from a large trial, not a press release.

Kidney protection. High blood sugar beats up your kidneys over time — about a third of people with diabetes end up with chronic kidney disease. These meds help control blood sugar and appear to slow that damage.

Cravings beyond food. This one's fascinating — early studies suggest GLP-1s may reduce cravings for alcohol and other substances. More research needed, but patients tell us versions of this in clinic all the time.

Possible colon cancer protection. Preliminary evidence, but exciting — these meds may have protective effects against one of the most common cancers.

Brain health. Some studies hint at protection against Alzheimer's and cognitive decline. Early days, but worth watching closely.

The common thread? Less inflammation, better metabolic health, lower organ fat. The scale moving is just the part you can see.

One thing I'll add from the clinic side: none of this works if you can't stay on the medication. That's where a real program — dosing support, protein targets, actual humans checking on you — makes the difference between a headline and a result.
