Women beat Men by ~6% in Weight Loss on Tirzepatide and Semaglutide

[From the New England Journal of Medicine]

A new landmark clinical trial has delivered the clearest comparison yet between two of the most popular weight loss medications: Tirzepatide and Semaglutide. Over 72 weeks, researchers followed 751 adults with overweight or obesity, all of whom had at least one additional weight-related health concern (excluding diabetes). The results, recently published in the New England Journal of Medicine, are striking-especially for women seeking more effective weight loss solutions.

Participants taking Tirzepatide lost an average of 50 pounds, or about 20% of their body weight, while those on Semaglutide lost about 33 pounds, equating to nearly 14% of body weight. Tirzepatide users also saw greater reductions in waist circumference, losing an average of 7 inches compared to 5 inches for Semaglutide users. Notably, almost one in three Tirzepatide patients lost at least 25% of their body weight, versus about one in six for Semaglutide.

A key finding from the study is the difference in results between women and men. Across both medications, women experienced about 6% greater weight loss than men. This means that women, on average, responded even more favorably to these treatments, achieving higher percentages of body weight lost compared to their male counterparts

.

Both drugs operate by mimicking gut hormones that regulate appetite and fullness, but Tirzepatide targets two hormones while Semaglutide targets one, which may explain the superior results seen with Tirzepatide. While mild-to-moderate gastrointestinal side effects were common, the overall health benefits-improved blood pressure, cholesterol, and glucose-were significant for both groups.

For women looking for the most effective medical weight loss option, these results highlight Tirzepatide as a leading choice, offering greater average weight loss and a higher likelihood of reaching transformative health goals.
