Is a Body Composition Scan Review Worth It?

I can gain three pounds after a salty dinner and still be making real progress. That is why any honest body composition scan review has to start here: the scale is diabolical. It measures total mass. It cannot tell you whether you are holding water, building muscle, or actually losing body fat.

I have been on this medication myself and am down more than 90 pounds. I have also had a 60-day plateau that made me question every decision I made. Not fun. My monthly Styku scans gave me something the scale could not: a clearer trend over time.

What I Look for in a Body Composition Scan Review

Our Styku scanner creates a 3D image and estimates measurements such as body-fat percentage, lean mass, circumference, and changes in shape. The word to pay attention to is estimates. A scan is useful data, not a courtroom verdict.

A good scan review looks at the direction over several months, not whether one number moved exactly the way you hoped this week. Hydration, posture, clothing, and the time of day can all affect a single reading. We keep scans consistent so we can compare useful trends instead of obsessing over noise.

At Pacific Northwest Medical Group, I have watched this click for patients again and again. Someone comes in frustrated because the scale barely changed. Then we pull up their monthly scans and see inches coming off their waist or a better body-fat trend. Their face changes. They were not failing. Biology was being biology.

Why the Scan Matters on GLP-1 Medication

The medication can quiet the food noise. That part is huge. But the medication is only half of it.

When appetite drops, it becomes easy to eat too little protein and lose more than just fat. That is why we ask our patients to aim for at least 100 grams of protein a day and give them resistance bands. We are trying to protect the muscle that helps you stay strong and maintain your progress after the weight comes off.

A body composition scan helps keep that conversation honest. If weight is dropping quickly but lean mass is heading the wrong way, we do not just clap because the scale is lower. We talk through protein, resistance work, and what is actually happening.

That lit up my engineering brain. I like feedback loops. Change one thing, measure it consistently, then make a smarter decision. Randomly cutting more food because the scale annoyed you? Nope.

The Trade-Offs Nobody Should Hide

A Styku scan is not magic. It will not tell you exactly what to eat tomorrow. It will not make a frustrating week disappear. And if you scan once, then never again, you have a snapshot rather than a trend.

It also works best as part of a real program. We have treated more than 1,300 patients, and I have seen the difference between being handed a vial and being supported through the process. Our patients have labeled prescription vials with their own names, drop-in hours when questions come up, and monthly scan reviews that keep small problems from becoming quit points.

Mail-order programs can leave people alone with medication and a scale. Then the scale stalls, panic sets in, and they assume the medication stopped working. Yikes. Often they just need context and an actual human conversation.

If you are considering a scan, do not ask whether it will give you one perfect number. Ask whether it will help you make better decisions for the next month. That is the value. Trust the process, but measure it honestly.
