Hi everyone - here is new research recently pubished by JAMA (Journal of American Medical Association) Psychiatry regarding how Semaglutide and Tirzepatide help improve the emotional well-being of patients on the medications. Below is my summary - and as always there's a link at the end to the full research report.
A new study published in JAMA Psychiatry gives us some good news: using GLP1-RAs like semaglutide doesn’t increase the risk of mental health problems or make depression worse.
Unfortunately, people with obesity are more likely to have mental health issues like depression. This can lead to problems with taking their physical health medications, not managing their blood sugar levels, and an increased risk of health problems related to obesity and diabetes. While some health agencies have raised concerns about the possible negative psychological effects of GLP1 medications, these concerns have been inconsistent.
The researchers in this study looked at 80 double-blind, placebo-controlled randomized control trials involving 107,860 patients with obesity and diabetes. They wanted to see how GLP-1's use affected their mental health, mental health-related quality of life, and the risk of psychiatric adverse events.
The researchers studied the data and found that using GLP-1's didn’t make people more likely to have serious or non-serious mental health problems, and it didn’t change their depression symptoms compared to a placebo. But it did help people feel better about their mental health, eat less, and stop emotional eating.
Dr. Toby Pillinger, an expert in obesity and diabetes and the lead author of the study, said, “Obesity and diabetes can really mess with both your physical and mental health. Our analysis of data from many clinical trials shows that GLP-1's are safe for your mind as well as your body, and they might even help you feel better."
“As more people start taking these medications, our findings give patients and doctors peace of mind that these treatments can help you take care of both your body and your mind.”
