5 Misconceptions about GLP1 Medication [Dr. Varney - Univ Virginia]
Updated: Jul 22
Hello everyone — as Clinic Director, I spend a lot of consults untangling the same five myths, so let me do it once here. (Inspired by a good piece from Dr. Varney at UVA — full article at the bottom.)
1. "You can just order them online now, so clinics are obsolete." LillyDirect and similar platforms don't actually sell you medication direct — they connect you to telehealth prescribers. You're still getting a prescription from someone. The question is whether that someone ever sees you again. A vial in the mail isn't a program.
2. "Everyone's on them." Despite the buzz, only a small fraction of eligible patients are actually using these medications. If you feel late to the party — you're not. You're early, and the research keeps getting better.
3. "They're new and untested." GLP-1s have been used for diabetes since 2005. Twenty years of safety data. The weight-loss applications are newer, but the molecule class is not some experiment.
4. "It's cheating." Covered this one before and I'll keep covering it: obesity is a hormone-driven medical condition. Treating it with medicine is no more cheating than treating blood pressure. Your biology fights weight loss — these level the field.
5. "You'll gain it all back, so why start." Partial truth hiding a lie: regain happens when people stop abruptly with no plan. Supervised step-down and maintenance dosing change that math entirely. We've walked 1,300+ patients through this — the ones with a plan keep their results.
Questions we didn't cover? That's what consults are for. Free, no contract, no pressure.
