Science's 2023 Breakthrough of the year.
Updated: Jul 22
Hey everyone — Science Magazine, one of the most respected journals in the world, named GLP-1 medications (Semaglutide, Tirzepatide) their scientific Breakthrough of the Year for 2023. The full article is long, so here's our summary to save you time. :-)
Consider what that means. Science doesn't hand that title to diet fads. Previous breakthroughs of the year include things like the James Webb telescope and mRNA vaccines. Putting GLP-1s in that company says something about how the scientific community views these medications: not as a trend, but as a genuine shift in medicine.
Why the fuss? Because obesity has been medicine's unsolvable problem for decades. Advice worked on paper and failed in bodies — "eat less, move more" ran headlong into hormones, metabolism, and biology that fights back. These medications are the first treatment that works WITH that biology instead of demanding patients defeat it through willpower.
And the story keeps expanding. Since that award, the research has piled on: cardiovascular protection, kidney protection, reduced inflammation, potential benefits for brain health, addiction, sleep apnea. What started as a diabetes drug, then a weight-loss drug, is turning into something closer to a whole-metabolism treatment.
I share this because I still hear "isn't this just the new fad?" from time to time. Fads don't win Breakthrough of the Year. And fads don't produce the results we've watched across 1,300+ patients at our two clinics.
The science is in. The question is just whether it's right for you — and that's a conversation.
