7 Best Ways to Maintain Weight Loss (that work)

Hey GLP-1 Patients of PNW Medical Group -
Losing weight is hard. But keeping it off? That's where a lot of people get blindsided. And I get it — I've been there myself.
Here's the truth: if you've lost weight and gained it back, that doesn't mean you failed. It usually means the plan ended before your body was ready to maintain the result.
So here are seven things that actually help with maintenance — and why we strongly encourage patients to consider staying on a low maintenance dose of medication.
**1. Have a maintenance plan before you need one**
Maintenance isn't the "after" phase where you're suddenly on your own. It needs its own strategy. At PNW Medical Group, we don't just say "congrats, good luck." We build a step-down plan with you — gradually reducing your GLP-1 dose to find your "sweet spot." For most patients, that's about one-third of their weight-loss dose. Enough to keep the food noise quiet. Enough to stay in control.
**2. Stay on medication if it's working**
I'll be straight with you — patients who stay on a maintenance dose keep more weight off than those who don't. Overwhelmingly. Some people can taper off completely and do fine. But for many, obesity is a chronic condition, not a short-term problem. Staying on a low dose isn't dependency. It's treating weight management with the same seriousness as any other long-term health issue.
**3. Keep some structure**
You don't need to obsess over every bite. But don't throw away all your tracking the second you hit your goal number. Regular weigh-ins. Periodic body scans. Meal planning. These are your early warning system. A 2-5 pound fluctuation is normal. A 20-pound regain is what happens when you stop paying attention.
**4. Prioritize protein and strength training**
Muscle matters. It supports your metabolism, your strength, your mobility. Without enough protein and resistance training, you can end up lighter but weaker and hungrier. We recommend at least 100g of protein a day. Walk 10 - 30 minutes most days. Add resistance training 2-3 times a week. That's not bodybuilding — that's just protecting what you've built.
**5. Don't go back to the habits that caused the problem**
Sounds obvious, right? But this is where people get tripped up. You should absolutely enjoy your life and eat normal food. But if takeout every night, grazing after dinner, or emotional eating drove the weight gain before — those patterns don't magically become harmless because the scale changed. Know your triggers. Make your environment work for you.
**6. Protect sleep and stress**
Poor sleep increases hunger and lowers impulse control. Chronic stress pushes you toward emotional eating and skipped workouts. Even medication can't fully offset a lifestyle that keeps your body in survival mode. Your maintenance strategy has to work on your hardest weeks, not just your best ones.
**7. Reach out early**
If you notice cravings coming back, the scale creeping up, or old habits sneaking in — call us. Don't wait for your next scheduled visit. Early adjustments prevent setbacks. That's what we're here for.
Here's the bottom line: the medication matters, but the program around it is what changes outcomes. Our maintenance program includes regular check-ins, body composition tracking with our Styku 3D scanners, nutrition guidance, and coaching. At both our Puyallup and Federal Way clinics, we're with you from your first dose to long-term maintenance and beyond.
Your results are worth protecting. Don't go it alone.
